The Undocumented Neighbor
A friendly gecko peeked out from behind a picture frame on our patio. Likely a gold dust day gecko, originally from Madagascar, this species was illegally introduced to Hawaii through the pet trade and has since thrived, becoming a familiar yet invasive presence across the islands. Competing with native species for food and habitat, it represents both the unintended consequences of human actions and the remarkable adaptability of life in foreign environments.
